It takes 1 BTU of gas to heat 1 pound of water by 1 degree. When we measure Therms (BTUs) saved, we are measuring the savings of consumption of natural gas.
We evaluate these savings by calculating the number of Intellihot heat exchangers (Hex) in operation and the number of hours they operate. We multiply the total hours of Intellihot Hex operation by their average firing rate to calculate the number of BTUs used. We compare this number by the total BTU estimated by traditional water heating equipment for the same number of Hex operation. The difference gives us the savings of natural gas consumption.
For natural gas, 117 lbs. of CO2 is emitted per million British thermal units (BTUs) of energy. When we compare the difference between BTUs used by traditional equipment and Intellihot heat exchangers, we get our final CO2 emissions savings number.
